Virginia Votes Yes to Redistricting
In a referendum held by the state of Virginia, voters approved a redistricting plan introduced by Democratic lawmakers that would change congressional district borders to make them more advantageous for liberal candidates. The plan, which is predicted to improve Democrats’ odds for four seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, passed by a small margin at 51.5% of the popular vote. The proposal was advanced amidst a recent redistricting “war” between lawmakers fighting for what is currently an extremely slim majority in the House, as California and Texas have also moved to redraw their congressional districts for Democratic and Republican gain, respectively, ahead of mid-term elections later this year. However, Judge Jack Hurley from Tazewell County in southern Virginia has blocked the measure’s certification, citing misleading language and transgression of rules in passing the referendum. The case is currently up before the Virginia Supreme Court.

France-United Kingdom
Deal on Channel Migrant Control
The United Kingdom and France are set to sign a three-year agreement on Thursday under which the UK will pay $891 million (£660 million) to help France prevent migrants from crossing the English Channel to seek asylum in the UK. The deal comes after negotiations to extend the previous three-year agreement collapsed on March 31, and includes provisions on methods to stop small-boat crossings and how costs should be shared. Under the new plan, increased enforcement efforts include deploying a 50-member riot squad to stop people from boarding boats, along with 1,100 additional enforcement, intelligence, and military personnel targeting smuggling networks, migration routes, and people seeking refuge. The 40% increase in personnel is intended to reduce the number of migrants attempting the journey, which has reached over 6,000 crossings this year, though that figure is 36% lower than the same period last year.

World
Greenwashing in Meat & Dairy
A 2026 study published in PLOS Climate found that 98% of climate pledges made by the world’s largest meat and dairy companies may constitute “greenwashing,” creating a misleading sense of environmental progress. Many of these pledges have emerged in recent years as the animal agriculture industry faces increasing pressure from environmental advocacy groups. The industry is responsible for an estimated 57% of global food system emissions and at least 16.5% of total greenhouse gas emissions. In their study, researchers analyzed 1,233 environmental claims made by 33 major meat and dairy companies between 2021 and 2024 and found that many relied on vague, unverifiable, or misleading language. Only 29% of these claims were supported by any form of evidence, and just three were backed by peer-reviewed scientific research. While 17 of the 33 companies made net-zero commitments, only four reported meeting those targets by 2020. Even then, many of these goals rely on carbon offsets rather than direct emissions reductions.

The Zagros Mountains are a long mountain range in Iran, northern Iraq, and southeastern Turkey. The Zagros range has a total length of 990 miles (1,600 km). It begins in northwestern Iran and roughly follows Iran’s western border while covering much of southeastern Turkey and northeastern Iraq. From this border region, the range continues southeast to the waters of the Persian Gulf. It spans the southern parts of the Armenian highlands, and the whole length of the western and southwestern Iranian plateau, ending at the Strait of Hormuz. The highest point is Mount Dena, at 14,465 ft (4,409 m).
