Venezuela
Blocked Aid Corridor
Aid corridors and distribution points for humanitarian supplies and food items have been established by interim president, Juan Guaidó. However, in one of the corridors that was set up along a Colombian-Venezuelan border town, Cucuta, military officials loyal to Nicolas Maduro used a large truck and cargo container to block access, denying U.S. aid supplies from entering. Former leader, Nicolas Maduro, maintains that accepting humanitarian aid from the United States is a forerunner to a full military invasion by the U.S.. Other supply terminals include Boa Vista, Brazil and the Dutch Island, Curacao.

Turkey
Territorial Disputes
Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, and Turkish President, Tayip Erdogan, met in Ankara today to discuss a number of bilateral issues, including a territorial dispute over energy exploration off the coast of Cyprus. Gas was discovered in the area in the early 2000’s. Both Greece and Turkey can claim the area as an “exclusive economic zone (EEZ),” allowing them to develop gas exploration. However, given the eastern Mediterranean Sea’s concave shape, both claims overlap, which has driven tensions over the past years.

Tonga
New Island Baffles Scientists
NASA scientists paid their first visit to one of Earth’s newest islands, Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai. The volcanic island erupted from the rim of an underwater caldera approximately three years ago and is one of only three new islands to emerge in the last 150 years to have survived more than a few months. The island, which has no official name but is referred to as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai (HTHH), is nestled between two landmasses—Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha’apai. NASA reported that the land mass is covered in a light-colored, sticky, clay-like mud which continues to “baffle” them. A high-resolution 3D map will be created, with scientists aiming to return next year for further study. Initial estimates suggest the island may survive up to 30 years, before eroding away.
This map depicts the approximate location Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai (shown in pink lettering) in relation to the other Tonga islands. Click on the map to expand.
