Venezuela
EU Recognizes Guaidó As President
As of Monday, 13 European countries including the UK, Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, and Denmark have officially recognized Juan Guaidó as the interim president of Venezuela. The news comes after incumbent leader, Nicolás Maduro, rejected the EU’s Sunday deadline call for a snap election. Maduro fired back at his critics, warning President Trump that he risked a repeat of the Vietnam War if he intervened. Currently, Nicolas Maduro maintains the backing of Russia, China, Turkey, and the support of the Venezuelan military elite.

Australia
Flooding in Queensland
After weeks of record-breaking heat in Australia, monsoon rainfalls are endangering nearly 20,000 homes of being inundated.  In just under a week, over a meter of rain has fallen over certain parts of Queensland, Australia; Townsville, Queensland has been affected the worst. Authorities deliberately opened the dam gates to prevent it from overflowing, flooding about 2,000 homes. The Bureau of Meteorology has warned residents to seek shelter and safety as floodwaters pour through the affected areas during this “once-in-a-century” flood.

United Arab Emirates
Pope Francis Visits UAE
On Sunday, Pope Francis became the first pontiff to travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Prior to his arrival, Pope Francis condemned the conflict in Yemen, which the UAE is involved in, and stated that all parties should uphold the truce agreement to allow for food and medical aid distribution.  During his visit, the pontiff will preside over a mass, which is expected to attract at least 135,000 people, and is engaging in an inter-religious conference today. The trip to UAE is said to be a historic moment for religious tolerance; UAE is now one of more than half a dozen countries with large Muslim populations Pope Francis has visited.
