Venezuela
Police Station Fire
A fire at a police station in Valencia, Venezuela has left 68 people dead. The blaze reportedly started after prisoners set fire to multiple mattresses in attempt to break out on Wednesday. Local police used tear gas to subdue relatives who surrounded the station after news of the fire rose. Chief state prosecutor, Tarek Saab, said an investigation into what had happened is his top priority. Nearby human rights groups immediately began to criticize Venezuelan authorities for failing to attend to the rapidly declining conditions in the nation’s jails.

Canada
Earliest Human Footprints
A study published Wednesday in PLOS One, reveals the findings of the earliest human footprints in the Americas dating back 13,000 years ago. The footprints were discovered on Calvert Island, just off the western coast of Canada, north of Vancouver Island.  This finding challenges previous notions that the earliest humans to cross over from Asia traveled into North America by venturing inland rather than hugging the Pacific coast. The footprints reveal a new migration pattern which allowed early settlers to access plants and animals along the shore line as well as a route to avoid large glaciers. Researchers confirmed the excavation of 29 footprints that belonged to a family of four.  The footprints were so well preserved researchers were able to assign them a modern day shoe size.

Poland
Arm in Arm with the U.S.
Poland has signed an agreement to purchase the Patriot missile defense system from the United States. This is the largest arms procurement deal in Polish history. The Patriot is an advanced surface-to-air missile system designed to defend forces against aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles. President Andrzej Duda agreed with the United States to buy Raytheon Co’s system for $4.75 billion in what he calls a major step to modernize its forces. This follows reports that Russia had deployed nuclear-capable missile systems in its territory of Kaliningrad, which borders Poland. The first deliveries are expected to occur in 2022.
