Democratic Republic of Congo
Humanitarian Crisis
Amid clashes between two ethnic groups- the Banunu and Batende communities- the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are experiencing high levels of displacement and loss of life in their communities. A recent UN investigation in the Yumbi district of the DRC highlights that the intercommunal attacks carried out in late 2018 and early 2019 were planned and executed by customary chiefs and amount to crimes against humanity. The investigation team found that at least 535 men, women and children were killed and about 1,000 structures burned, looted, or destroyed. The report confirms at least 19,000 have been displaced due to the conflict.

Israel
Controversial Comments
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated Sunday that “Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people – and them alone.” This was in response to Israeli actress and TV host, Rotem Sela, who said on her social media that “Isreal is a country for all its citizens.” President Reuven Rivlin criticized Netanyahu’s comment, which comes ahead of the upcoming election in April, saying that it was an “unacceptable public discourse regarding Arab citizens… We are all equal in the voting booth.” Critics have said that Netanyahu may have purposely said this before the election to help his Likud party at the polls. Palestinian Arabs make up around 20% of Israel’s population.

| Fornite is the extremely popular free, online video game that has over 200 million registered players. It launched in September 2017 and quickly gained attention including praise from celebrities like Drake, a rapper. Athletes have also danced the game’s victory dances during their games, and gamers, like the popular Fortnite player, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, stream online on Twitch, the live-streaming platform, or play in tournaments where thousands attend in person and millions watch online. The game lets users play on multiple platforms, allowing them to switch from their phones to their consoles.
Fortnite Season 8 has just launched with many new additions, including a big change to its map which is critical for playing the game. Sunny Steps, Lazy Lagoon, and a volcano are new areas that have been added. There are three game modes: Save the World, Battle Royale, and Creative, with Battle Royale being the most popular. 100 players fight each other, either by themselves or as a squad, and the last person or squad standing is the winner. Each player must use the map to find weapons and equipment to protect themselves. On a random spot on the map, there is a large circle that is the safe space. Anyone outside the safe space will take damage until they die or get to safety. Every couple of minutes, the safe zone shrinks and its location changes to a random spot in the current zone, forcing players to get closer to each other.
The new season also brings in a different theme: pirates. New themed items are added throughout the season, and the most recent update brought Treasure Maps. To find a treasure map, you need to find it in Chests or as Floor Loot, which can be found using the map as they are scattered throughout. The Treasure Map will indicate the general direction of where you need to go to find the buried treasure.
