World
Global Climate Strike
Students and workers all over the world will go on strike today to demand that leaders take action on climate change ahead of the upcoming U.N. summit in New York City. Climate strike events began early today in Australia, Japan, and the Philippines and are expected to extend across some 150 countries. Lead by Greta Thunberg, a 16-year old climate activist, protesters in New York City will rally outside of the United Nations to call for united, worldwide action against what many have come to call a “climate crisis.” Schools all over the world have allowed excuses absences for students on strike.

Kiribati
Island Nation Cuts Diplomatic Ties with Taiwan
The government of Kiribati has cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan, just four days after the Solomon Islands, leaving 15 countries with official ties to Taiwan. The Taiwanese government claims the move comes after China offered the island nation funding for commercial ferries and airplanes to switch diplomatic relations. Kiribati is the seventh country to drop ties with Taiwan since 2016. Taiwan has been a de facto sovereign nation since the end of a civil war in 1949, but China still views the island as its territory and aims to bring it under central control.

This map depicts nations around the world which still have diplomatic ties with Taiwan, excluding Kiribati and the Solomon Islands. Click on the map to expand.

Arctic
Year-Long Expedition
On Friday, researchers from 19 nations launched the largest and most complex year-long polar expedition in an attempt to better understand global climate change. The project named MOSAiC (Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate) project is expected to cost about 140-million euro ($158 million) and includes scientists from Germany, the United States, Britain, France, Russia, and China. The German icebreaker Polarstern, which will serve as the research vessel, set sail from Tromsoe in northern Norway and will study the ocean, atmosphere, and how the sea ice system evolves over an entire calendar year.
