Global Holiday Travel Restrictions
The worst year on record for the travel industry continues amid the winter holiday season as governments continue to impose restrictions on international travel amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This map by Skyscanner uses data from the International Air Transport Association and shows COVID-19-related travel information and the restrictions that are in place when travelling from the United States. The live map shows entry restrictions and quarantine requirements for travel from any country in the world. As of this week, there are thirteen countries with low restrictions for travel from the United States including Brazil, Colombia, Serbia, and Turkey. Americans can travel to these low-restriction countries and likely won’t need to quarantine upon arrival or return. 107 countries have moderate restrictions where travel is possible if certain entry regulations are met including possible testing requirements. Quarantining may also be a requirement upon arrival and return from these countries. 105 countries currently have major restrictions on travel from the United States where travel is suspended, or entry may only be possible for citizens or special circumstances.

Cyclone Yasa Makes Landfall
Cyclone Yasa, a top Category 5 storm, officially landed over the Bua Province on the northern island of Vanua Levu Thursday night, bringing with it 177 mph winds and widespread flooding. Two people have been confirmed dead thus far. According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, as of today, Yasa has weakened to a Category 3 storm. It also just missed the capital, Suva, located on the southern main island of Viti Levu, where just under a million people live. Prior to Yasa making landfall as one of the most intense tropical storms on record, Fiji’s Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama, urged his people to find shelter or make an escape if shelter wasn’t sturdy enough. While homes have been destroyed and flooding occupies much of the land, residents’ most immediate needs are food and water, according to one resident, Sanaka Samarasinha. The UN plans to assist the Fiji government with response and relief efforts.

Malicious Software
On Thursday, Microsoft Corp said it found malicious software in its systems related to a massive hacking campaign disclosed by U.S. officials this week. The hacking campaign, which U.S. officials suspected was the work of Russian intelligence, began as early as March but was only discovered last week. SolarWinds, the company behind the software targeted by hackers, said up to 18,000 of its more than 300,000 customers had downloaded the compromised software. The true scale of the breach remains unknown but reports indicated that of the more than 40 organizations it had identified as being significantly impacted, 80% were in the U.S., but there were also victims in Belgium, Canada, Israel, Mexico, Spain, the U.A.E., and the United Kingdom. America’s top cyber agency, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA), did not identify what information had been stolen or exposed but stated addressing the intrusion would be “highly complex and challenging.”

This map depicts where people downloaded the SolarWinds compromised software. Click on the map to learn more.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: Created in 2006, which national monument is the largest contiguous fully protected conservation area under the U.S. flag?

A: Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument
One of the largest marine conservation areas in the world, the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument encompasses about 582,578 square miles (1,508,870 square kilometers) of the Pacific Ocean between the Hawaiian Islands and Midway Atoll. Its total area is still larger than all the country’s national parks combined. Established on June 15, 2006, under the authority of the Antiquities Act (16 U.S.C. 431-433), the area was first called the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument. In 2010, it was listed as a mixed (natural and cultural) World Heritage Site, a first for the United States.
