Global Vaccination Campaign
Countries around the world are racing to inoculate their populations against COVID-19 in the largest vaccination campaign in history. More than 25 million doses have been administered in 43 countries across the globe. This map by Bloomberg tracks the percentage of the population vaccinated in each country. Israel leads the world in terms of percentage of their population vaccinated, with more than 20% having received the first dose of vaccine, while China and the United States lead in numbers of shots administered, with nine and eight million doses given respectively. At least 10 vaccines have been approved around the world for full or limited emergency use, including Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech in the U.S. and E.U., and Sinopharm in China.

Sriwijaya Plane Crash
On Saturday, a plane carrying 62 people crashed into the Java Sea minutes after take-off, marking the country’s third major airline crash in just over six years. Reports indicated the Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737 was en route from Jakarta to the city of Pontianak, on the Indonesian side of Borneo, when it lost contact 4 minutes into the flight at 2:40 p.m. local time, about 11 nautical miles north of Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Officials stated there were 50 passengers – including seven children and three babies – and 12 crew members on board when the plane went down. Indonesian authorities on Sunday reported they had located the black box recorders in 75 feet of water and hoped to retrieve them soon from the seabed. Rescuers retrieved human remains along with scrap metal and clothing items from the area, but no survivors have been found.

Spain
Storm Filomena
Over the weekend, Storm Filomena struck Spain, blanketing large parts of the country in its heaviest snowfall in 50 years. The storm claimed at least four lives, affected about 12,500 miles (20,000km) of roads, resulted in airport closures, and left thousands trapped in their cars for as many as 12 hours without food and water. Reports indicated as much as 20 inches (50cm) of snow fell on Madrid, one of the worst-hit areas, between Friday night and Saturday, bringing the country’s capital to a standstill. On Sunday, soldiers were deployed in clearing some of the 700 major roads affected by the rare blizzard. The Spanish government said it had taken extra steps – including police-escorted convoys – to ensure its expected shipment of some 300,000 coronavirus vaccines can be distributed as planned to regional health authorities. Forecasters warned of dangerously icy conditions in the coming days, with temperatures expected to fall to 14°F (-10°C).
