World
Positive Results from Vaccine Trials
A vaccine in development for COVID-19 is proving to be 90% effective in trials. The vaccine which will stimulate a person’s immune system to produce immunity from the virus is jointly being developed by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech. The testing of the product in Phase 3 of trials is ongoing but the CEO of Pfizer said that the results provide initial evidence of its ability to prevent COVID-19. This map by COVID-NMA shows where in the world the clinical trials for a vaccine are taking place. Phase 3 of vaccine trials is when a drug is given to thousands of people and tested for efficiency and safety. The company expects to supply up to 50 million vaccine doses globally in 2020, and up to 1.3 billion doses in 2021. The positive breakthrough comes as many parts of the world, COVID-19 cases are soaring to record highs, with hospital intensive care units filling up, and the death toll continuing to rise.

Azerbaijan
Key Town Captured
On Sunday, Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev announced Azerbaijani forces had taken control of the strategically key city of Shusha in Nagorno-Karabakh, where fighting with Armenia has raged for more than a month. Armenian officials denied the stronghold had fallen, with defense ministry representative Artsrun Hovhannisyan saying despite substantial Azerbaijani reinforcements, “tomorrow, with God’s help, the battle for Shusha will end.” Shusha, Nagorno-Karabakh’s second-biggest settlement, is a mountaintop town strategically located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of the region’s capital — Stepanakert (known as Khankendi in Azerbaijan) — and is situated along the main road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. The city is regarded by both sides as an important spiritual center. At least 1,000 people have died in the region since fighting broke out.

Friday’s Answer

Q: Stretching from the coast of Labrador to the southeast coast of the island of Newfoundland, Iceberg Alley is part of which ocean current?

A: Labrador Current
Originating at the Davis Strait, the Labrador Current is a combination of the West Greenland Current, the Baffin Island Current, and inflow from Hudson Bay.  This cold ocean current has a low salinity level and reaches depths slightly greater than 2,000 feet (600 m). The volume of water transported by the current varies between about 125,000,000 and 190,000,000 cubic feet (3,500,000 and 5,400,000 cubic m) per second and annually carries several thousand icebergs off the coasts of Labrador and Newfoundland. Roughly 90% of the icebergs seen off these coasts come from the glaciers of western Greenland, while the rest come from glaciers in Canada’s Arctic.
