Telemetry Shows Movement Decline
Mapbox has aggregated and analyzed telemetry data to measure the change in local travel patterns since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak. Mapbox’s telemetry data analyzes 16 billion anonymous moving points around the world to model traffic patterns. This particular map looks at the percentage decrease in traffic volumes throughout Europe between the week of January 13th and March 16th of this year. Countries that instituted ‘shelter in place’ measures earlier in the outbreak have had the biggest decrease in local travel. The drastic quarantine measures had a significant effect on movement in countries like Italy and Spain, where there has been more than a seventy-five percent decrease in traffic. In countries like the United Kingdom, where restrictive travel measures were adopted later, the decrease has not been as prominent.

Nigeria
Ambush Kills 70 Soldiers
On Monday evening, Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, launched one of their deadliest attacks to date in Nigeria. In the northeastern state of Borno, Boko Haram used rocket-propelled grenades to target a convoy of soldiers and military officers in the village of Gorgi, killing 70 Nigerian soldiers. The incident followed a similar attack in neighboring Chad on Monday morning, where the group killed 92 Chadian soldiers in a seven-hour assault. Since 2009, violent attacks from Boko Haram have killed nearly 36,000 people and displaced two million in the region.

Northern Pacific
Earthquake Off Kuril Islands
A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck in the Northern Pacific early this morning. The epicenter of the 37 mile-deep quake was located 136 miles southeast of Russia’s disputed Kuril Islands and 870 miles northeast of the Japanese city of Sapporo. The U.S. Geological Survey initially announced a tsunami warning for coastal regions of the Pacific, including Hawaii, but this was later cancelled. Earthquakes of this magnitude and strength have the ability to cause great damage and have caused tsunamis far from the epicenter in the past. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center announced that there is no further threat of a tsunami as only very small waves were generated.

A: Don Juan Pond, Antarctica
The Don Juan Pond is a small and very shallow (4 inches deep) hypersaline lake located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica. Its high salinity levels enable this lake to remain liquid even at temperatures below -50 degrees Celsius.
