UN Vote
On Thursday, of the 193-member United Nations General Assembly, 128 countries voted in favor of a resolution calling for the United States (US) to renounce its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The vote comes on the heels of a US statement that the country would cut financial aid to those who voted in favor of the resolution. 35 nations abstained, nine voted against and 21 countries did not cast a vote. The US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has sparked violence in the region between Israelis and Palestinians as both places stake claim to the region. Israel claims the city after capturing East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East War and Palestinians wants it as the capital of their future home state. This map depicts the complex geography and historical boundaries of Jerusalem and which areas are controlled by Israel or Palestine. Click on the map to learn more.

Spain
Catalan Result
Catalan pro-independence parties delivered a victory on Thursday’s regional elections. The separatist parties won by a slim majority with three groups winning a combined 70 seats of the 135-seat Catalan parliament. The win comes after the October independence referendum which the Spanish government deemed illegal and instead imposed direct rule on the region. The act resulted in violent clashes between pro-independence activists and police forces. This map depicts the percentage of people who voted for pro-independence parties in Catalan. Click on the map to learn more.

A: Taimyr Peninsula, Russia
The number of reindeer on the peninsula has drastically decline from 1 million in the year 2000 to an estimated 600,000 in 2016. Scientist state the drop in population is due to rising temperatures and human activity.
