Yemen
Air Strike on School Bus
In the northern province of Saada, Yemen, a school bus was the target of a Saudi-led strike. Reports confirm that at least 39 people have been killed and over 50 are wounded, most of them children.  The school bus was traveling in the Dahyan market in the Houthi-controlled area. Pro-government forces have been backed by Saudi-led coalitions in an effort to restore government control and regain territory taken by the Houthi rebels in recent years.  Just last week an air strike in the rebel-held city of Hodeida killed 55 and wounded 170 more.  This map depicts the province of Saada in Yemen where the strike occurred. Click on the map to learn more.

United States
State of Emergency Declared
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and the city of Charlottesville declared a state of emergency on Wednesday ahead of the one-year anniversary of a violent white nationalist rally which left one person dead and dozens injured. The official “Unite the Right 2” anniversary rally, organized by neo-nazi and white supremacist groups, is scheduled to take place on August 11 and 12 at Lafayette Park, Washington D.C. and around Charlottesville, VA. After last year’s rally and chaotic incidents, authorities faced criticism for their handling of violence. This year, the declaration of emergency will allow Virginia National Guard to assist in security efforts. Heavy police presence will also serve to deter violence; more than 700 state police will be activated in the area over the weekend. This map depicts restricted access areas in Charlottesville for the upcoming weekend . Russia
Ukrainian Hunger Striker
Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian film-maker went on hunger strike on May 14 to appeal Russia to free 64 jailed Ukrainians whom he considers political prisoners. Russia put Sentsov in jail in Labytnangi, a town in Russia’s Arctic north. He was found guilty of plotting terrorist acts, including several arson attacks in the city of Simferopol, Crimea after Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula in March 2014. The Ukrainian government claims that Sentsov is being punished for being a Crimea-based pro-Ukrainian activist. The film-maker recently was reported in a “catastrophically bad” state and believes “the end is near.” This map depicts the location of the arson attacks in 2014. Click on the map to learn more.
