Peace Talks Begin
The Yemen government and Houthi rebels began peace talks for the first time in two years with the United Nations on Thursday. The talks are taking place in Sweden, with representatives from both sides coming face-to-face, spurring hopes of a possible breakthrough. Over 14 million Yemeni people have been facing starvation due to the civil war, forcing most of the population to rely on aid groups to survive. Thus far, the two groups have agreed to free thousands of prisoners on both sides, with the hopes of possibly reaching a cease fire and reopening of Sanaa ‘s airport to allow more resources into the country.

Portugal
China Ties
Portugal and China have signed a memorandum that will include Portugal as part of China’s belt and road initiative, which promotes expanding land and sea links between Asia, Africa, and Europe via infrastructural development. China will invest in Portuguese infrastructure as an important stop on it’s maritime “Silk Road” route. China sees Portugal as a strategic European port location as it is the closest European stop after cargo ships pass through the Panama Canal. While much of the EU is concerned about China’s increasing investments in Europe, Portugal welcomes these investments after being bailed out by the international community in recent years.

Sailor Stranded at Sea
A British citizen, Susie Goodall, sailing solo in an around-the-world sailing race became stranded after losing her mast from powerful winds Wednesday. The sailor was on day 157 of the 30,000 mile race around the globe when a storm caused her yacht to flip over, and her mast to snap. The 29 year old woman was able to set off her distress signal after being stranded on her journey 2,000 miles off the coast of Cape Horn near the Southern tip of South America. Chilean authorities who responded to the call diverted a carrier ship to rescue her. The ship reached her boat this morning and the rescue is underway.
