Map of the Week: USA Snacking Trends

By Alice Yee

Let’s not get in a “dips”-ute over these chip rankings.

Boulder Canyon, Utz and Zapp’s have all claimed the #1 spot across a few US states as the healthy snacking trends proceed to expand to western states and Florida. According to SeekingAlpha.com, Utz Brands has focused on investing into profitable plants and growth drivers like the 2024 distribution center, spending 70% more than its original plan, while divesting from low-margin brands and unproductive factories.

Meanwhile Ruffles takes over the west, south, and midwest regions. Exceptions include: Old Dutch’s popularity in North Dakota and Minnesota, Better Made’s acclaim in Michigan, and the high Pringles demand in Ohio, Missouri, and Alabama. Cape Cod’s fame has also been recognized in New England states, like Maine and Vermont. As a matter of fact, according to MentalFloss.com, “Utz ties with Cape Cod as the second-most popular chip brand by state.”

Does this mean that everyone should be investing in Utz Brands? Not quite…

This company as well as peer snacking industries appear to have a significant debt intake (Utz: $1.05 billion). So, while signs may not point to a fast-growing stock, it’s reasonable to assume that this business will continue to be active in the market and may show steady growth in the future.
