The Seabin Project has created an automated rubbish bin that has been developed to catch floating rubbish, oil fuel and detergents from various types of water. So far the Seabin has been designed for floating docks in the water of marinas, private pontoons, residential lakes, harbors, water ways, ports and yacht clubs. Still in its prototype stage, the Seabin is looking for support in production to build a product in the most sustainable and economically feasible way.
How can the Seasbin help clean the world’s oceans? Marinas, ports and yacht clubs are the ideal places to begin the process of cleaning our oceans. There are no huge open ocean swells or storms inside the marinas, and they are relatively controlled environments. Because of major wind and heavy currents, floating debris tends to make its way across oceans and into every port, marina and yacht club. The Seabin can be placed in these locations to catch the rubbish brought in by Mother Nature.
How does it work? The Seabin is situated at the water’s surface and is plumbed into a shore based water pump on the dock. The water gets sucked into the Seabin bringing all floating debris and liquid into the bin. All the floating debris is then caught and the water continues to flow through to the bottom of the bin and into the pump on the dock, and eventually back into the ocean.
The goals of the Seabin go beyond just cleaning the ocean, they include: supporting local economies with the production, maintenance and installation of Seabins worldwide; educating people and cultures about being more responsible with the use and disposal of plastics; setting up educational programs for students in schools; and to convert captured plastics into renewable energy.
