Strawesome: Reusabale Glass Straws for a Greener Life

strawsIn our fast-paced and throw-away culture, most of us are not aware of just how much plastic we use each day.  The common drinking straw seems innocent enough, but that very same straw that you used to slurp up your smoothie could someday soon be sitting in a land fill, or floating around the ocean.

In 2009 Daedra and Brian Surowiec came up with a solution to this plastic straw problem.  The wife-husband team founded Strawesome.  Strawesome is a company that creates beautiful glass drinking straws.

“Strawesome was born from the idea that I could create functional art that would not only be beautiful but would also bring function for the user and sustainability to the world around them,” says Daedra Surowiec.  These straws come in a variety of colors and styles, and best of all, they are reusable.

The company’s mission state pledges to, “create functional artistic products that improve the health and well-being of our customers and the environment. The embracing of reusable glass drinking straws will remind people of the dangers of plastics and reduce the use of non-biodegradable plastics being dumped in landfills every day.”

Switching from single-use plastic straws to reusable glass straws is an easy thing that consumers can do to help the environment. When asked what Strawesome envisions for the future, Surowiec responded that, ” We envision a future full of a society that refuses single-use plastics in any form. Whether it’s a straw, a cup or a plate, we’d love to see consumers make a major shift in their thinking about disposable products.”

So what’s up next for Strawesome and their customers? The company has come out with a line of Special Edition Straws.  Each straw supports a different organization, with a portion of the sale benefiting the organization associated with the straw.  “This gives consumers a chance to vote with their dollar and get a really unique straw at the same time,” explained Surowiec.
