Vizonomy: A climate risk platform

Vizonomy

Vizonomy is a climate risk platform. They assess the risks of flooding and sea level rise for building, city and neighborhood, and infrastructure and critical sector vulnerability. They also include social media real-time emergency response. These estimations can use either FEMA Floodplains or NOAA Sea Level Rise Scenarios to estimate economic losses.

Vizonomy is designed for government users – from urban planners and sustainability officers to hazard mitigation officers and floodplain managers – who need to understand their community’s coastal and riverine vulnerability. Their platform meets needs in mapping, complex data analysis, and visualization. Data is important for decisions and Vizonomy makes that accessible to create more resilient communities.

The platform that the company creates is customizable to the project. They provide comprehensive data that meets federal standards. You can visualize risk, show in depth analysis, hazard data, methodologies, footprints, and a summary. All of the data can be shared with others with a private link or PDF report.

Founder Ricardo Saavedra explains that ” we have automated the climate risk assessment process so that any U.S. community can subscribe to our software – rather than pay a large consulting fee – and develop their own customized risk assessment using federal data and standards for assessing losses.” After just celebrating their 1st birthday on July 14th, Vizonomy is now beginning “look across different domains. We are beginning to do analytics on the change in wildfire risk, droughts, extreme heat; factors which affect other sectors.”

Vizonomy consults as well to help build applications to display data. Vizonomy uses open source mapping software which allows for the customer to interact with the data.

Open source mapping sites “opens you up to a world of possibilities” for Vizonomy. It can grow and change with an advancing project. This also allows Vizonomy to “provide a software and service for communities to assess flood risk and sea level rise risk by simply being able to log in online and pay the subscription fee that is 10x lower than the average cost of a risk assessment by a consulting company.”

Vizonomy is helping the future of the urbanized world. Learn more about the company and the future of our urbanized world in November at the AGS Geography 2050 Symposium.
