Israel Strikes Houthi Port
Israel responded to Friday’s Yemeni Houthi-coordinated Tel Aviv strike with airstrikes in Yemen. On Saturday, Israeli fighter planes struck Houthi military targets close to Hodeidah port, resulting in three casualties and injuring 87. The Houthi attack was the farthest-reaching attack in the war thus far. According to Israeli estimates, the Houthi drone covered 2,600 miles (4,184 km) to reach its target. The primary entrance point for aid into Yemen, the port of Hodeidah, was the target of Israel’s retaliation. With an estimated 2,236-mile (3,600 km) round trip and an unspecified amount of time spent over Yemen, it was one of Israel’s longest aerial missions to date.

Cyprus
50 Years Since Partition
This past weekend, Cypriots held alternately mournful and celebratory commemorations of the Turkish invasion 50 years ago that resulted in a de facto partition of the island. In the part of the island run as the largely-unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, ethnic Turks marked the anniversary as a liberation of an oppressed minority from a coup government looking to unify the island with mainland Greece. In the Republic of Cyprus in the southern part of the island, the occasion was memorialized as a brutal invasion that divided the country. Between the two zones, the island is split by a UN-enforced buffer zone filled with abandoned buildings, including what was the main international airport for the country outside the divided capital of Nicosia. Politicians in Greece, Turkey, and the two groups of Cypriots give no indication the island will see any movement towards reunification in the near future.
This map depicts the the area of the island nation of Cyprus that was attacked by Turkish forces 50 years ago and the respective areas of control by the two rival administrations and the UN-enforced buffer zone between them. Click on the map to learn more.

Wildfires Rage in West
Wildfires in Western Canada have forced the evacuation of several communities as hundreds of active fires continue to burn across the region. An extended heat wave, extremely dry conditions, and lightning without rain have ignited many of the new fires this week in British Columbia and Alberta. These conditions not only affect wildfire-prone areas but also pose a risk of poor air quality as smoke travels across parts of Canada and into the United States. In British Columbia, more than half of its over 250 wildfires are out of control, covering over 150,000 acres (62,000 hectares) and impacting around 5,000 residents. Heat warnings remain in place across the region, with temperatures soaring above 86°F (30°C), creating hot and dry conditions when combined with potential thunderstorms, could spark new fires.
This map depicts the locations of wildfires across Canada, where the western provinces of British Colombia and Alberta are experiencing out of control fires prompting evacuations in the region. Click on the map to learn more.

Q: What Indonesian island has the greatest concentration of active volcanoes?
A: Java
The geography of Indonesia is dominated by volcanoes that are formed by subduction zones between the Eurasian plate and the Indo-Australian plate. It has the most volcanoes of any country in the world, with 76 volcanoes that have erupted at least 1,171 times in total within historical times. The densely populated island of Java has the greatest concentration of active volcanoes, yet serious eruptions are few; only 35 of its 112 volcanoes are active. Both of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes – Kelut and Mount Merapi (meaning “mountain of fire”) – sit on Java Island. The highest volcano is Mount Semeru, at 12,060 feet (3,676 m).
